This year (2008-2009) marks the twenty-sixth year that a HOBY seminar has been held in Southeast Texas. HOBY Texas Gulf Coast serves Houston and the surrounding area, as far north as Lufkin, northwest to Bryan-College Station and southwest to Hallettsville. The seminar has been held at Rice University. |

| The Texas Gulf Coast Leadership Seminar runs for three days and exposes over 240 area sophomores to business and community leaders from our area. The format of the seminar develops leadership skills. The seminar encourages interaction between the student ambassadors and community leaders and role models. This interaction challenges participants to examine issues critically. At the end of the Seminar, one male and one female ambassador are selected to attend HOBY's World Leadership Congress. | ||||||||||||

Who Are We? A non-profit organization founded in 1958 by Hugh O'Brian, which holds conferences in 50 states and internationally. HOBY Texas Gulf Coast held its first conference in 1982. Last year approximately 210 schools in the Texas Gulf Coast region were represented. |

Our Purpose To seek out, recognize and develop leadership potential commencing with high school sophomores. To expose students to distinguished leaders in the community. To show students they can make a difference. To teach students how to think versus what to think. All HOBY seminars focus on the theme "America's Incentive System." |

How Do We Achieve? We bring outstanding sophomore students together in an annual all expense paid seminar. The students, called Ambassadors, get a realistic look at what makes the American Incentive System work, thus enabling them to think for themselves. This is accomplished through panel discussions, speakers, and leadership exercises. Topics range from education to the media. |

Selection of Ambassadors All sophomore students in the Texas Gulf Coast region are encouraged to visit with their high school counselors regarding HOBY TGC participation. The schools nominate their outstanding students, who then attend the seminar. Student selection is left entirely up to the high school. |

Finances HOBY Texas Gulf Coast is financed by monetary donations from corporations, civic organizations, individuals and gifts-in-kind. All our board members are volunteers and receive no salary. All monies raised are applied directly to the leadership seminar. The cost of the Texas Gulf Coast seminar per student is approximately $325. |
